NUMU is excited to partner again with Santa Cruz based artist, Luz Donahue. In 2020, Luz held a wonderful in-person workshop at NUMU introducing students to abstract expressionism. Registration is taken directly through Luz’s website and NUMU members also receive a special discount and some one-one time! This is more than an art making class, it’s about connecting with your inner artist by transposing some of your unique experiences, emotions, and processes into art. This class can also be great to offer to someone as a gift. Or, if you’re in a partnership with someone, it can be a great activity to do with your partner and take some time to explore your creativity with your partner while gifting yourselves the space to reflect on the year together.

Gouache is an overlooked watercolor medium that has amazing versatility and can transcend the boundaries of many other mediums. It can wash like watercolor, blend like an opaque oil, and dry brush like acrylic. Best of all it sidesteps the need to plan and reserve whites as in watercolor. It’s water soluble nature allows for tremendous travel capability and setup ease and clean up. Since it’s dry time is fast, as in watercolor, you can paint, mat, frame and hang in a day. This introduction to gouache will cover its many strengths, from reintroducing lights and delicious velvety matte finish, to intensely rich pigments and set up ease.

Fee: NUMU Member: $100  | General: $120
All Materials Included with Tuition

All class fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable.

Explore the ancient process of Takbon, a traditional Korean printmaking technique for transferring the textures of objects onto paper. The result is similar to a rubbing, but instead of using friction and a crayon or charcoal, an inked dauber is tapped on the surface of the paper. This gentle method of tapping reveals minute details and allows for the arrangement of different objects in a single print. Novice and experienced printmakers  are invited to discover this unique approach to printmaking and experiment a variety of shape and texture combinations using natural objects, such as leaves, flat seashells, large feathers, as well as coins, buttons, keys, ceramic tiles, anything with texture and depth! Students are encouraged to bring a favorite short poem or haiku, which can be printed with an embossing label maker and illustrated. By the end of the workshop, students will take home 6-8 prints and a new found appreciation of an ancient art form.

About the Instructor:

Cindy Davis was introduced to printmaking while staying in Perugia, Italy where she became a student of artist and Franciscan Padre Diego Donati. Cindy helped form a print cooperative in Columbus Ohio, where for 20 years she has taught numerous classes in a variety of techniques.

It’s that time of the year!  Time to whittle down your holiday gift checklist!  Get your dye on at NUMU’s Indigo Dye Night: Holiday Edition, Thursday December 14th, 5:00-8:00pm.

Maximum Participants 12. Pre-register early to ensure a spot in the class. Class fees are non-refundable. This class is suitable for beginners as well as more advanced participants.  A no-host wine bar will be provided. $5 per glass.

In this in depth three-hour workshop lead by our expert resident indigo dye artist, Zoë Umholtz, you’ll explore the basics of indigo dyeing, including unique techniques for folding, twisting, tying, clamping fabric, creating patterns and varying color depth resulting in designs that are wholly unique to your making. You’ll receive one yard of muslin, but we encourage you to bring multiples of un-dyed and pre-washed cotton, linen, silk fabrics, t-shirts, napkins, table linens, scarves, socks, make-up bags, and much more to complete your holiday gift list. The sky’s the limit in creating that perfect gift for your special someone, or for yourself. Please wear clothes you don't mind getting messy, as indigo will permanently stain fabrics.
