Join us for a special talk and live Q&A with artist Tony May about the creation of his site-specific installation for the San Jose Museum of Art, “Variable Book Construction (Bookmobile),” (1991-1995). In this program, Tony May will trace the lineage of ideas that culminated in the creation of the Bookmobile. For many years, Tony worked with discarded books as a subject matter. His studio is layered with reclaimed material waiting to be put to good use, idiosyncratic objects, and tools that each hold their own story. May considers that an earlier function of the historic San Jose Museum of Art building was a library, just as the New Museum Los Gatos building was originally a library, and muses that the mobile “suggests that ghosts of books still hover around the building.” If you want to learn more about the story of how the Bookmobile came to be, then this is the program for you!
In this special virtual tour, Tony May will give us an inside look at the construction of the T. House, sharing a selection of process photos, details and inspiration. The T. House is a handmade building—initially constructed over the course of ten years and still evolving—in the style of Japanese carpentry and woodworking. Tony May’s installation at NUMU, Views of the T. House (1991-1992), features 18 photo-real acrylic paintings that serve as a record of the T. House’s material details and May’s process building it.

Gouache is an overlooked watercolor medium that has amazing versatility and can transcend the boundaries of many other mediums. It can wash like watercolor, blend like an opaque oil, and dry brush like acrylic. Best of all it sidesteps the need to plan and reserve whites as in watercolor. It’s water soluble nature allows for tremendous travel capability and setup ease and clean up. Since it’s dry time is fast, as in watercolor, you can paint, mat, frame and hang in a day. This introduction to gouache will cover its many strengths, from reintroducing lights and delicious velvety matte finish, to intensely rich pigments and set up ease.
