LGS Recreation and New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) are partnering to bring you a fun day filled with arts, crafts, and immersive activities inspired by National Diversity Day. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to celebrate your family’s diversity through art and history activities led by community partners from Los Gatos and the wider Bay Area. Join us for a conversation with Alexander Hernandez, a textile and mixed media artist whose vibrant quilted works explore issues of gender, immigration, and cultural assimilation with dynamic and creative techniques. In this hour-long discussion, Hernandez will discuss his most recent work as the inaugural Artist in Residence at NUMU. He will highlight his experimental approach to textiles utilizing non-traditional materials and techniques such as spray paint, found objects, and accentuation of rips, stains and loose threads.

We are delighted to be holding two Earth Day workshops on Saturday April 23 inspired by Jane Olin’s photographs in her NUMU exhibition In the Company of Trees, one for children ages 8-12 and one for teens ages 13-18. In these workshops participants will work with poet Patrice Vecchione to craft their own poems and collages inspired by Jane’s photos. Spots are limited in light of our Health and Safety protocols. This workshop is for children only, and parents are asked to drop-off and pick-up children at NUMU.

Join us for a special virtual artist talk with Jane Olin, interviewed by guest curator Helaine Glick.

In this hands-on sculpture workshop, participants will learn how to make one- and two-part, non-toxic silicone putty molds and then cast multiples from them using a variety of substances including plaster, mortar, and chocolate(!). Attendees will go home with their reusable molds and the casts they've made, plus a comprehensive instructional packet so they can experiment at home with the techniques we learn.
