In this oil painting workshop, attendees will get an inside look into John Peck’s art practice and learn the "sight-size" method of painting from life. We use a limited palette of colors and build a portrait or figure painting based on a solid drawing. The workshop will have two models to reference and cover the following: charcoal block-in drawing, monochrome underpainting, the Sight-Size Method, identifying your motif, massing with both darks and lights, a breakdown of related materials, and much more!
*Please note: this is a three-day workshop.

Meet the Artist
As a close friend once shared:
If you seek the miraculous, look to the ordinary-
but look very carefully.
John Peck graduated from the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. He teaches portrait and figure drawing at Stanford University (Stanford Continuing Studies) and portrait and figure painting at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, CA. His paintings have been sold in galleries in London, Dublin, Florence, Charleston and Santa Fe.
John has a B.S. in Physics from the University of San Francisco and a Master of Architecture from the University of New Mexico. He seeks to integrate science, design, and the craft of painting in every piece of artwork.
“I believe that drawing and painting are fundamentally about a search for visual truth in nature- the objects of still life, the landscapes around us, or the faces and figures of models and clients. The real work lies in an effort to establish and maintain an honest inner dialogue... essentially, to “turn off” one’s rational argument for “how something should look” and simply, plainly, honestly observe and record what I do see.”
In accordance with the New Museum Los Gatos, masks are required while inside the museum. Masks are not required for participants that can show proof of their up-to-date* Covid vaccination.
Do not attend if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, or have been in close contact or tested positive within the past 10 days.
*Up-to-date with their vaccines, which includes booster doses at regular time points.
