Once you’ve covered the best practices in obtaining and caring for your collection, our final workshop will look to caring for your collection in the long term. This will include how-to’s on protecting, growing, and lending your collection for exhibits. Expert panelists will include preparators, insurance companies, security, and collections management.

NUMU and the Whitney Modern gallery present a series of workshops on collecting art, inspired by NUMU’s current exhibition, A Call to Collect, which features works from the collections of three Los Gatos collectors. Learn the basics of collecting art from experts across the field, including gallerists, museum professionals, and conservators. The workshops will be structured as an interactive seminar, providing participants the opportunity to ask experts practical and theoretical questions about collecting art.

Resource sheet with insurance, security, and collections management vendor contacts will be available. Online sources will also be offered at each workshop providing relevant and useful information to all participants.

Have you ever thought about starting a collection, and wondered where to begin? Join museum professionals and gallerists as we discuss the basics of obtaining and caring for your burgeoning collection. This workshop will also include some of the practical basics and best practices for caring for and displaying your collection. Workshop leaders will include gallerists and professional framers.

Shadowbox your Collection

Saturday, March 4  |   1-3pm  |  $20 Members, $25 General
Ages 8+

Design your own shadowbox with instructors Elizabeth Greer and Karen Harlan, and then  put it to use to showcase your favorite collection. Inspired by our current exhibition A Call to Collect, we are imagining how we might to display our treasured collections, coins, photographs, and more! Bring your favorite collection items, and mount them in your own shadowbox. 

Elizabeth Greer has been working with elementary and middle school students for over 15 years. She is a long-time member and past president of the Art Docents of Los Gatos. An active Maker, Elizabeth enjoys exploring the intersection of art, science and technology with students while creating projects like rockets, digital art and photography, and LED artworks in classes at NUMU and the Los Gatos Recreation Department. 

Karen Harlan has been drawing, sewing and creating since childhood.  As a collector of vintage textiles, Karen likes to take something old and re-purpose it into something beautiful and useful for today.  Karen was an art director at Papyrus greeting card company for seven years and still freelances for them today.  She has also been a member of the Art Docents of Los Gatos since 2007 and enjoys sharing her love of art with children.
