Circle Members will be treated to an exhibition tour of New Additions by NUMU curator Allison Railo, where they'll get insight into the museum's collection, the stories behind these artworks and objects, and view what we've acquired in the last 5 years. This will culminate with the latest addition to our permanent collection. Artist Jody Alexander will reveal the limited edition artwork series she created for our Director's Circle members, inspired by the incredible waterways in Los Gatos. We'll get to learn her artistic process and the insights behind it. Read more below on what inspired this year's commission.

Director's Circle Artist Commission
Director’s Circle members enable NUMU to expand its reach within the community as a place where active and imaginative minds can flourish. They are the museum’s partners in the stewardship of the art and history of Los Gatos and the surrounding region. In appreciation, each year, Director’s Circle Members receive a limited edition artwork by a Bay Area artist, commissioned specifically for them. Two pieces from the commission are also made for the museum: one stays in the Permanent Collection, and the other is used for fundraising. In this way, the Director’s Circle program not only supports personal collecting but also helps to build NUMU’s Permanent Art Collection.
"Aqua Lab Project is a series that I have been working on since early 2023. It explores the allure of water through my open water swimming as I photograph the color of water and collect data during my open water swims around the world. To date I have documented twenty California lakes, six lakes and two rivers in Switzerland, the Sea of Cortez around Isla Espiritu Santo in Baja, Mexico, the Caribbean around St. Kitts and Nevis, Sea Pools and the ocean around Sydney, Australia, the Puget Sound and Lake Washington in Seattle, and the waters around Santa Cruz, CA. The project for the NUMU Director’s Circle will focus on the waterways of Los Gatos: Vasona Lake, Lexington Reservoir and the Los Gatos Creek that connects them. Due to restrictions I won’t be able to swim in these bodies of water but I plan to adventure out by foot along the Los Gatos Creek trail, and on a paddle board at Vasona and Lexington to collect data, and photograph the water with my underwater camera. The result will be a piece that presents photographs, data, and routes, using transfer techniques on Japanese washi paper."

About Jody Alexander

Jody Alexander is a book, fiber, and mixed-media artist who includes textiles, objects, wall pieces, garments, and installations in her artistic practice. Her work is inspired by the art of repair, reuse, and by the imagery and stories encountered in her travels on the ground and in the water.
Alexander is fascinated with water. She swam competitively between the ages of eleven and twenty-one, and was on the U.S. National Team in 1979, qualified for the 1980 Olympic Trials (which was canceled due to the U.S. pulling out of the Olympics), and swam on scholarship for UCLA.
When the pools closed in the spring of 2020, Alexander turned to the ocean and lakes to continue her daily swims.
Her latest project, “Aqua Lab: In Search of the Third Thing,” is an investigation to understand her attraction to water. “Is it,” she asks, “the weightlessness, solitude, color, patterns of light, sound, adventure, or the thrill of the unknown?”
