2022 is a blank slate. We feel tentative, but we have a chance to create something new, build new connections, and build resilience. Luz Donahue is an artist that has carved a practice by guiding people through unknown and sometimes difficult emotional pathways, towards unexpected insight.

Through In the Artist’s Studio, we get a glimpse at the creative process of someone who can reveal poetry from the chaos of the blank canvas. Her miniature watercolor paintings portray the richness that a universe of possibilities affords to those who are willing to listen.

Trees have played a meaningful role in Jane Olin’s life since childhood. Climate change and human mismanagement now threaten trees across the globe, but new research reveals previously unknown information about their complex social structures and ecological relationships. With renewed curiosity and a sense of urgency, Olin embarked on a wide-ranging exploration of trees. In the Company of Trees features photographs from that undertaking—the most recent additions to her series, Intimate Conversation. Olin’s expressive approach and her innovative process prints reveal a haunting and singular perspective on trees. Her work conveys both the seeds of hope and the seeds of impending destruction, which only human beings can resolve.

The Carrying Stones Project, from artist Sawyer Rose, shines a light on the systemic and pervasive inequalities that working women face, including the physical, emotional, and practical effects of these disproportionate labor loads. The artworks in this show portray the deeply personal work stories of a diverse group of women and are accompanied by the data that tells a bigger story. The women profiled are a mix of ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations, occupations, and socio-economic statuses.

ArtNow 2021: Good Trouble

This year, NUMU invites Santa Clara County high school students to create an original work of art in response to the exhibition theme: Good Trouble.

From his activist work as a Freedom Rider marching on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965, to his decades-long legislative work on the Voting Rights Act, Congressman John Lewis (1940-2020) never strayed from his pursuit of justice and equality. New Museum Los Gatos honors the battle and the achievements of this acclaimed leader by inviting high school student artists from Santa Clara County to render and submit their interpretations of Lewis’ call to “make some noise and get in good trouble.”

“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”—John Lewis on the ongoing fight for equal rights, 2018

ArtNow 2021: Virtual Exhibition Announcement

All of us at NUMU dream about the day museums can reopen and welcome our community in-person once more. Although Covid-19 has created many obstacles with temporary closures of museums nationwide, along with the inability to host in-person gatherings, there is potential to reach and serve an even wider audience than we ever thought possible. With a few months of virtual programs under our belts, NUMU is excited to announce that our premier annual exhibition of high school artists, ArtNow, will be an exciting digital exhibition that you can visit 24 hours a day!

Now in its tenth year, ArtNow will be entirely virtual in 2021, presenting a new opportunity for emerging artists to gain exposure through virtual presentations of their artwork, online gatherings to celebrate their accomplishments, and a commemorative exhibition catalog. Stay tuned for an exciting series of programs that will help young artists get noticed and launch their artistic careers. We’ve already received over 200 submissions and we are so impressed with the caliber of work responding to this year’s theme: GOOD TROUBLE. Submissions closed January 31st at midnight.

None of this would be possible without the talented students artists, encouraging teachers and parents, and the generous support of our sponsors. We’d like to thank our sponsors that have stuck by us, and remained dedicated to NUMU’s vision to offer equal and equitable representation, opportunities and services to all. In particular, we wish to thank visionary supporters Alyce and Michael Parsons for helping us launch ArtNow back in 2011. We also owe a special thank you to The Town of Los Gatos, Los Gatos Morning Rotary, The Flick Family, University Art, West Valley College, Saratoga Rotary, The Waitte Foundation, Ginger & Jon McDonald, The Linda Smythe Young Artists Fund, Jillian Troftgruben, John & Valerie Hopkins, Heritage Bank of Commerce, California College of the Arts and KCAT TV 15. Because of all of you, ArtNow continues to inspire and acknowledge young artists on the precipice of their artistic careers. I’ll see you online, and in-person, soon!

Views of the T. House (1991-1992) opens in the Spotlight Gallery on January 15. The exhibition features San Jose artist Tony May’s meticulous photo-realist paintings that document the gradual progression of his idiosyncratic, functional, and on-going construction project, the T. House. This full scale backyard installation on May’s property, features detailed craftsmanship and Japanese-style carpentry. With each of the 18 paintings in the series, May deftly captures the details like the grit of cinder blocks in the T. house foundation wet after a rainstorm, and places each moment in context with graphic novel style captions on a crisp black frame.

New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) is pleased to present A Call to Collect: Whimsy Around the World, an exhibition that celebrates and investigates the pursuit of collecting folk art, featuring prized pieces from the collection of Los Gatos residents Lee and Dr. Paul Quintana.

The Quintanas travel extensively as Paul provides pediatric medical services in underserved communities around the world, including Mexico, South America, Asia and the Pacific as well as West Africa and the Middle East. And after more than 40 years of traveling the globe, the Quintanas have developed a collection of hundreds of pieces, some of which are cleverly repurposed or utilitarian objects and others which represent the material cultures of ancient, traditional and contemporary arts of each locale. This exhibition is curated by Allison Railo.

Acclaimed artist Warren Chang is featured in an exhibition titled In the Artist’s Studio: Featuring Warren Chang. Visitors are invited into Chang’s studio for an introduction to his work, creative process and life as an artist. In this virtual studio visit, a selection of the artist’s works, art making tools and personal items, along with rarely seen photographs of private studio spaces - rarely open to the public - are on view.

Chang’s studio is relatively small, a stand-alone building constructed in the backyard of his house in 2007. Inspired roughly by the architectural drawing of Norman Rockwell’s studio, it boasts a large bay window from the direction of the north. There is a long bookshelf installed along the north wall, containing hundreds of art books and literature, which are of constant inspiration to him. There is a small loft on the second floor primarily used for storing paintings and this is where he also stretches his canvas.

Join Warren Chang for a Talk and Tour of his art-making process from 2-3pm on April 7.

NUMU’s In the Artist’s Studio exhibition series, introduced in 2018, supports the museum’s mission to share stories in new ways. Most people do not have the opportunity to visit an artist’s studio and learn firsthand how artwork is made, and more importantly why it is made. Through this program, NUMU offers insight into the practice of artmaking and shares with the community the ingenuity, intelligence and empathy that goes into the creative process.

An artist’s studio is both a sacred creative space and a functional workshop, each as unique as the individual artist. The studios of artists provide a treasure trove of insight into their practices and personas. Examples from art history include painter Francis Bacon, known for working amongst a disheveled hoard of creative material. Georgia O’Keefe’s adobe home studio is filled with found bone fragments and rocks, and punctuated with windows that provide magnificent views - all informed and inspired her creative process. Constantin Brancusi’s workspace was chock-full with not only his sculptures, but also his own handmade furniture.

Warren Chang’s exhibition of large scale paintings of migrant farmworkers, titled Voice of the Fields, is also on view. More information is available here.

In the Artist's Studio is generously supported by the Borgenicht Foundation.

The Borgenicht Foundation works to promote the understanding of secularism as the way and hope for establishing peace in the world. In addition, the Foundation supports social justice, conservation and historic preservation, the arts, health, and education.

In the Artist’s Studio: David Middlebrook

June 28, 2018 – October 21, 2018. Free admission for all visitors.*

Internationally renowned Los Gatos-based artist David Middlebrook is featured in NUMU's In the Artist's Studio exhibition series that invites visitors to experience a virtual studio visit of local artists.  The exhibition presents an introduction to his work, creative process and life. Visitors will see Middlebrook’s sculpture, view art making tools and personal items, and photographs of private studio spaces, which are rarely open to the public. In David Middlebrook’s studio, and in his installations around the world, he brings to his art practice his life experiences, skill, imagination, passion, humor, history and, most importantly, the magic that occurs only in the artist’s studio.

Middlebrook’s studio is nestled in the hills of Los Gatos, surrounded by ancient oak trees. The building where he does much of his work is a large barn-like structure accented with unique salvaged windows. The space is filled with an assortment of supplies, tools and works in progress, as well as found objects, personal mementos and memorabilia from childhood. Middlebrook’s artmaking spreads outside into an adjacent open-air studio where huge pieces of stone and metal sit under the trees waiting to be transformed into large-scale, site-specific works that encompass all shapes and sizes.

NUMU’s In the Artist’s Studio exhibition series supports NUMU’s mission to share stories in new ways. Most people do not have the opportunity to visit an artist’s studio and learn firsthand how artwork is made, and more importantly why it is made. Through this series NUMU offers insight into the practice of artmaking and shares with the community the ingenuity, intelligence and empathy that goes into the creative process. NUMU introduced the series in January 2018 featuring the studios and practices of San Jose-based artists George Rivera and Kristin Lindseth.

Seeds of Hope

  • Google Calendar ICS

NUMU was inspired by Bay Area artist Michele Théberge's interactive art installation project for the 100 Days of Action initiative undertaken by artists around the country. Theberge's project, Seeds of Hope amplifies the stories, hopes and dreams of all Americans as a part of NUMU's Summer Celebration Open House event to invite and share the stories from our community. Seeds of Hope unites and amplifies the wishes, hopes, dreams and aspirations of all Americans, in a secular prayer action. Théberge represents each participant with a small painting of a seed. As each seed is pinned to the gallery wall, the personal intention of that participant is spoken out loud.

Over the course of the installation, hundreds of seed paintings representing individuals and their hopes and dreams will come together in large wave-like formations. One wave will represent those who have lived in the United States for one or more generations, and the other represents newcomers. Each painted seed stands for our potential to contribute to our nation and fulfill our own dreams in the process. New immigrants, and those whose families have been here for ages, will grow into one interwoven whole on the gallery wall.

This installation begins at NUMU on Saturday, June 24, 2017 during our Summer Celebration. Michele Théberge is interested in gathering your personal hopes and aspirations. If you could have someone pray for your dreams or wishes to come true, what would your most simple request be? All responses will be kept anonymous, unless you choose to share a name. During the summer months, we invite the public to continue adding their hopes and stories at our Seeds of Hope artist station in the NUMU MakerSpace.

MICHELLE WILSON. El Proceso, 2007. Handmade flax and abaca paper, monofilament, custom book stand, letterpress, and screen print.

Power of the Page: Artists’ Books as Agents for Change

Opening May 4, 2017 and on view through September 17, 2017, New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) presents Power of the Page: Artists Books as Agents for Change, an exhibition that celebrates artist made books as agents for change and social awareness.

The book has played a vital role in the realization of our modern freedoms. The medium of the book creates opportunity for both intimate reflection and broad communication. Artists’ books are conceived as works of art in their own right and employ the unique expression of an artist’s design, words and images. In Power of the Page: Artists Books as Agents for Change, artists’ books tell stories of liberty and give voice to the call for justice. Narratives range from personal to public, from mythical to political.

Works on view in the exhibition include selections from artists from the Bay Area and beyond, including: Renee Billingslea, Ginger Burrell, Julie Chen, Casey Gardner, Diane Jacobs, Lisa Kokin, Susan Laudermilk, Mary V. Marsh, Camden Richards, Clarissa Sligh, Michelle Wilson and Linda Vallejo.

Curator Marianne McGrath says “The themes and subject matter explored in Power of the Page is timely. The combination of art, creative craftsmanship and the book format create a unique platform for these issues. I am excited to share this work with the community.”

NUMU will also present a variety of related programs to the exhibition, including summer artist bookmaking workshops for all ages, and a project on June 24th during NUMU’s Summer Celebration event where members of the community will be invited to create and print their own activist posters.

Power of the Page: Artists Books as Agents for Change is generously supported by Wanda Kownacki. NUMU also gratefully acknowledges support from its many donors and members.

Andrea Borsuk, Radiant Light: the Story of Eastfield Ming Quong, mural detail, 2017

Andrea Borsuk, Radiant Light: the Story of Eastfield Ming Quong, mural detail, 2017

In the 1930s, the Ming Quong Home in Los Gatos housed young Chinese, Chinese American, and Chinese biracial girls needing shelter and refuge from the Bay Area and throughout the United States, as well as Canada, Mexico, and Panama. Over several decades, Ming Quong would become part of a larger thread of merging organizations dedicated to giving at-risk children a better life. Today the historic property is the home of Uplift Family Services. This exhibit explores 150 years of the organization's origins.

Today, Uplift Family Services is one of the largest and most comprehensive family-centered treatment programs in California. Its history began in 1867 with a single building in San Jose that provided shelter for homeless youth under the name Eastfield Home of the Benevolence. Over the course of 150 years, the organization merged with other agencies, including Ming Quong, which provided safety and education for Chinese girls. Missionary Donaldina Cameron continued her dedication to rescuing Chinese women and girls, victims of human trafficking, which began in 1895 at the San Francisco Chinese Mission Home. By 1915, Chinese communities throughout the United States became more Westernized and Chinese children needed social services and shelter because of changes in the family structure. Cameron separated the victims of human trafficking from the innocent children who were products of divorce, unwanted in a second marriage, having lost one or both parents, emergency refugees, or had mental and physical health issues. She established Tooker Memorial Home in 1915 and the Ming Quong Homes beginning in 1925. The Los Gatos Ming Quong Home was established in 1936 for young girls, from Pre-K to 6th grade. With the help of local philanthropic organizations, it continued to ensure that children without advocates could have a second chance at life. This exhibit celebrates Donaldina Cameron and the Los Gatos Ming Quong Home that would eventually become Uplift Family Services.

More information on this exhibit may be found on our website through the Press Resources Page. Read press coverage for the exhibit on the NUMU in the News page. You may also sign-up to receive our Press Releases Here.

In the Heart of the Wild: Anne Brigman and Her Circle

In support of the New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) mission to feature exhibits that are connected to globally relevant ideas, art and history, NUMU is pleased to present In the Heart of the Wild: Anne Brigman and Her Circle an exhibit about 19th century Los Gatos resident, photographer and poet, Anne Brigman.

Born in 1869, Anne Brigman moved to Los Gatos when she was 16 years old. She first studied painting, but gravitated to photography and began exhibiting in 1902. Brigman focused on rugged landscapes and the female body, which resulted in new ways to explore feminine identity. She achieved early success as a Pictorialist, belonging to the Camera Club of San Francisco and the Photo-Secession group, led by Alfred Stieglitz in New York.

Brigman lived an active life, exploring territories that were literally and figuratively unfamiliar to many women of her time. She exhibited nationally and abroad, was published both as an artist in the photo journal Camera Work, and as a poet in her book Songs of A Pagan. All of her work reveals a love of nature, a connection to the mystical and an element of freedom.

In the Heart of the Wild: Anne Brigman and Her Circle features the photography and poetry of Anne Brigman, photographic work by Edward Weston, Imogene Cunningham, Judy Dater and others, as well as an interactive poetry activity for all museum visitors. The exhibit is made possible by the generous support of our partners, lenders and sponsors including: The Weston Gallery, Richard Gadd, Judy Dater, Craig Krull, Scott Nichols, Lite Line Illuminations, ClearEdge Advisors, the Borgnicht Foundation, and Donors to NUMU’s Annual Campaign.
