A Benefit Art Auction Exhibition
Art in the Time of Corona is New Museum Los Gatos' inaugural benefit art auction exhibition of artwork created during and inspired by the massive social and political upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic. These 51 artists have taken the period of isolation to innovate, explore different media, or use their work to reflect and process the reality of this time. Juried by curator and gallerist, Craig Krull, NUMU presents this exhibition as a rare opportunity to experience an eclectic range of work, united by this urgent theme. Proceeds benefit exhibiting artists and NUMU exhibitions and educational programs.
We Are All Alone in This Together
Michael Deyermond, a poet/artist that I work with, made a few text paintings during the pandemic with the words, “We are all alone in this together.” Isolation has been difficult, but it has also been a shared experience. The artists that I selected for this exhibition have clearly been introspective while coming to terms with an unprecedented reality. Some of the words they used to describe their artistic practice include; “endurance, catharsis, transcendence, resilience, engaged, and regeneration.” Many of them focused on “quotidian activities previously taken for granted,” sometimes just “listening to the rhythm of [their] breath” and employing their work as, “a barometer of the moment.” The exercise of jurying this exhibition has exposed me to the extremely personal emotional struggles of one hundred souls. Thus, the most difficult aspect of this process has not been selection, but elimination. One virtue that was reinforced by looking at this work was that of empathy. It may be the most important lesson we learn from the experiences of 2020.

Create in Place: Community Submissions
When the COVID-19 shelter-in-place mandate was announced in Santa Clara County in March, NUMU reached out to its community members with an invitation to participate in a project called “Create in Place,” to share ways that they were being creative while sheltering at home. What resulted was an exuberant response from community members of all stripes—artists, non-artists, adults, and children.
Art in the Time of Corona is generously supported by the Town of Los Gatos. Additional support is provided by NUMU Circle members and Annual Fund donors.
